Mass Timber Spiral

This staircase is a truly special project to come out of the MW Design Workshop.  We worked extensively with the clients, architect, interior designer, builder, and other trades to achieve this fully integrated feature in the home. The challenge we had was to create a stunning, aesthetically pleasing stair using Mass Plywood Panel (MPP), a structural mass timber product developed locally here in Oregon. We used 3D modeling to incorporate the complex interactions between the CNC-milled MPP treads and the rest of the custom features.

The stacked mass timber stair treads spiral up over 14 feet of vertical rise, while integrating into the precision water-jet cut library shelving system around it. Once installed and fastened together, every surface of the timber structure was meticulously hand-sanded smooth to feature the unique look of the plywood edge. Integrated into the back of the vertical shelving members is a strip of LED lighting which we collaborated with the electricians to make the system easy to install and service in the future.
