The grapevine residence is full of custom pieces we made. The double free-standing spiral staircases are the centerpiece of the home: we made two identical curves that stack on top of one another and feature a continuous handrail that extends from the basement all the way to the top floor balcony. Extensive hand-carving can be seen in the handrails, millwork, and skirt boards of the stair. We also built custom wine cellar doors featuring the same vine motif as the stair. For the entryway we created 3 custom curved doors, two for the closets and one for the entry. Coopered in shape, these three doors are also engineered to have little movement between seasonal moisture changes, and the entry door has a custom curved glass panel made for us in Vancouver, BC especially for this door. The handle and threshold are in solid silicone bronze, custom forged and machined to accommodate the round shapes. For a project like this, the design and engineering takes place even before the foundation is poured; we work with the architect, designer, builder, and all tradesmen to ensure that the final product fits into the home from a construction as well as aesthetic point of view.
